New Diasporans Versus Life in the UK.

Migrating to the United Kingdom from any other country of origin in the world is supposed to be a smooth experience that opens up a exciting social connections and opportunities for young people. Unfortunately, it is an experience that is often filled with challenges caused by poor language skills, unfamiliarity with the English culture and customs, and confusion about how to get help.

Language difficulties that diaspora youths sometimes experience can have life-long effects on their confidence levels, increase their vulnerability to isolation and bullying, and stop them from participating in activities with their peers. All these challenges can increase their risk to mental health illnesses like depression and anxiety, which is a prime risk factor for suicide and self-harm.

Mental Health Support for Anxiety & Depression

We provide comprehensive nurse-led mental health support to diaspora youths and their families to prevent or manage anxiety and depression that comes with joining an unfamiliar culture and participating in the "deep end".

Boosting English Languare Skills

As English is often not their first language, diaspora youths will sometimes struggle to communicate. This restricts their engagement with peers and schools/college staff and can, in the long term, reduce confidence levels and lead to isolation and stress.

Supporting GCSE qualification Attainment

The UK academic year and stage age-groups do not align with origin countries of diaspora youths. Resultantly, on joining the UK education system, young people may not have the option of attaining GCSE qualifications. This can restrict demonstration of aptitude and limit future career chances.

Snippet of evidence for our cause...

Before migrating to the United Kingdom, young people may be subjected to traumatic experiences like violence from conflicts. This increases their likelihood to have greater need for mental health care when they work towards assimilating into the UK society.

Emphasised should be put on the importance of youth having a strong positive sense of identity and high self-esteem, which gives them the resilience to withstand the stressors of immigration.
